Scorchers thrash Lesotho in friendly

Scorchers yesterday put up a dominant performance to beat visitors, Lesotho, 3-0, in the first of their two international friendly matches at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre.

Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Lioness players Asimenye Simwaka and Sabina Thom scored all the goals with Simwaka having a brace.

The two sides will wrap-up their fixtures this afternoon at the same venue from 3pm.

Enterprising winger Simwaka scored her goals in the first half. She broke the deadlock as early as seven minutes into the game when she let out a short-range strike into the top corner before completing her brace in the 32nd minute with a simple header.

Throughout the stanza, the Malawi Women’s Football National Team the  more dominant side with at least eight chances against Lesotho’s two.

For the better part of the second half, the game appeared a balanced affair with Lesotho trying to battle back with incessant attacks that were stifled by the strong Malawi defence marshalled by Bernadette Mkandawire.  

Nevertheless, buoyed by cheers from the home crowd, the Scorchers kept their aggression intact and it bore sweet fruits in the 77th minute when Thom made it 3-0 to Malawi.

She ran with the ball into the box before shaking the net with a powerful shot.

Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili was happy with the overall display of his charges, saying they played according to instructions.

“In this game, our plan was to attack more throughout the match and we did just that,” he said.

Fazili gave three under-20 players, goalkeeper Yamikani Kaonga and attackers Faluna Umali and Hope Chikunga their debut appearance in the senior team and they did not disappoint.

Scorchers are using the two international friendly matches to intensify their preparations ahead of the upcoming Women African Cup of Nations (Wafcon) qualifier against Angola in October.

This year, the Scorchers have so far played seven international friendlies having also faced Zambia, Morocco and Ghana twice apiece.

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) product development and strategy manager Ibrahim Chapeyama, whose bank has injected K140 million into the team this year, yesterday said they were impressed with the team’s performance and they expect another good result tomorrow.
